Christmas Mini Lights

All of our mini lights are the new standard ( as brought to you by the light police .. rumor has it that some dog bit into a light cord several years ago which has necessitated a complete redesign of Christmas lights) anyway, each has end-to end connectors.

The Facts of Lights

The 1970’s saw a revolution in decorative lights and they now dominate the market when it comes to strands of lights. A mini-light is not much different from any incandescent flashlight bulb. The obvious question is how can you plug a 2.5-volt bulb into a 120-volt circuit? The key to using these small bulbs with normal house current in to connect them in SERIES. If you multiply 2.5 volts by 48 you get 120 volts. A typical strand adds 2 more bulbs to make 50. The lights in a 50 strand are wired like this:

You can see why mini-light strands are so sensitive to the removal of one bulb. It breaks the circuit so that none of the bulbs can light. The reason that a strand will stay lit when one bulb goes out is the addition of an internal shunt. If the filament goes out the shunt activates and keeps the current flowing so that the strand stays lit.

Strands of lights that have more than 50 bulbs are comprised of multiple circuits as the schematic indicates.

A bulb/circuit tester is available, from us, for a ridiculously low price.

  • Bulbs from different length sets should not be interchanged, they are of differing voltage and will burn out quicker… if, say a bulb from a 50 light set is used to replace a bulb from a 12 light set the speed of the burn-out will be in nanoseconds…. Poof.
  • The rule of thumb for the number of lights for a tree is 50 per foot of tree, at a minimum. Naturally, the more lights the better the result.
  • A flasher bulb is included with all sets. Insert this bulb and the string will flash.
  • We don’t recommend, nor do the manufacturers, connecting more that 3 sets with end-to-end connectors.
